FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR DRUG ABUSE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS AS PERCEIVED BY TEACHERS IN ASA LOCAL GOVERNMENT, KWARA STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
Drug abuse among Nigerian secondary school students has been a scourge to the overall sustainable development of the nation. In order to understand the causative agents behind this, factors responsible for drug abuse among secondary school students as perceived by teachers in Asa LGA of Kwara State was conducted. Descriptive survey was adopted; simple random sampling technique was used to select 200 teachers in Asa LGA. A researcher-structured questionnaire on “factors responsible for drug abuse among secondary schools students was used to collect data from the respondents. Findings revealed that factors responsible for drug abuse among secondary school students include inability to cope with loneliness, curiosity (that is, craving desire for drug abuse) and parent negligence; there was no significant difference in the factors responsible for drug abuse based on gender; educational qualification; work experience and religion. It was recommended that Secondary school students should be prevented from being lonely.
